Beautify Your Hands:
Don't be miffed about your mitts
By:  Mia Able
t's Friday night - you have on a cute LBD, hair is perfectly sleek and shiny, and your make-up is spotless. You look at your hands on the steering wheel and, holy smokes, they look horrendous! With no quick fix in sight, you have to spend the rest of your evening trying to keep your hands out of view.  Pretty hard to do while you are clutching a martini glass, or flipping your hair while flirting with the cute guy at the bar all night.  Prevention is key to avoiding a situation similar to this one.

There are a variety of issues that stop hands from being beautiful.  Dryness, large knuckles, wrinkles, veins, and poor nail care; all or combined or alone are enough to make your self-conscious.  The below hand of and unnamed celebrity displays a few problematic areas.  Don't worry, HMM will address these areas and give tips to keep you on the ball!

Dryness-
Frequent hand washing and use of alcohol based hand sanitizers can cause dryness.  Get into the habit of moisturizing after each time you wash your hands.  When it comes to washing dishes, use the dishwasher or wear your rubber gloves for extra protection against harsh dish liquids.  The Body Shop's Wise Woman Defensive Hand & Nail Cream is fantastic for restoring moisture and reducing any signs of aging.

During the Winter season, protecting the hands from the weather is important.  Cover them up with warm, cozy gloves to keep the cold air from drying the skin out during prolonged periods of time.  Applying hand creams before wearing your gloves can give a quick treatment.  Neutrogena's Norwegian Formula Fast Absorbing Hand Cream goes on smoothly and quickly absorbs into the skin, leaving a soft, silky feeling.

As a night time intensive treatment, try applying Vaseline Petroleum Jelly on the hands and then covering them with socks or knit gloves as you sleep. You'll wake with hands as soft as a baby's bottom.
Large knuckles & veins-
The majority of the time these things can't be fixed, but playing little tricks on the eye will help. Try off-setting large knuckles with large rings on the middle, pointer, or index finger - this will keep the proportions balanced.

For extremely veiny hands, try playing with your nail polish color. Soft pinks and peach tones will soften the look of hands that "appear" old from protruding veins. If your veins appear green, wearing magenta toned nail colors will help neutralize the green appearance of the veins. Hot pinks, reddish-pinks, and candy colored pink polishes will all do the job.
Poor nail care-
Going to salons is great, but continuous at-home nail care will make the difference. Maintain your cuticles - use a cuticle trimmer and cuticle oil on a weekly basis. If you don't have the time for that there are several cuticle remover gels on the market, in which you can apply and push away excess cuticle.

Don't let those jagged, hangnails go. Always carry a nail file
with you to take care of on the spot as they happen. Evening out cracked nails, removing chipped polish, and cleaning dirt from under nails will always give the hands a clean and "put together" appearance.

Lastly, paying attention to your choice of nail polish color is important. Vamp is not always fitting for the occasion. Nudes, bronzes, french manicures and ballerina pinks will always go a long way to making your hands look as dainty as possible.
