HMM's Interview Celebrity Make-Up Artist Sam Fine
By: Mia Able

HMM:  What have you been up to?

SF:  Work is keeping me busy, I just finished doing Iman's makeup for The Met Ball...my golden goddess!  I am about to shoot new Covergirl ads with Queen Latifah. It's like I am talking about a year ago. I recently worked with Paula Patton for the premier of Jumping the Broom, so I stay busy and have a lot of things coming up.

HMM:  Who else have you been working with?

SF:  Rihanna, Naomi Campbell, Iman, Tyra Banks, Khandi Alexander from HBO's Treme, RuPaul, Queen Latifah, Patti Labelle...Vanessa Williams, I've worked with her for 19 years-she's my longest running client.

HMM: Why do you like to participate in The Makeup Show?

SF:  I like doing education because it puts me in touch with the people my work effects.  Long before Twitter and Facebook,  I was doing classes; I was doing Bronner Brothers when my book came out 14 years ago.  So you get a chance to really connect with people.  Being a makeup artist in the industry, you all know what one another does.  When you are able to help a woman solve a beauty problem or an artist with a technique, you get a chance to lift them up in a very spiritual way, because you are talking to them artist to artist.  To be a "celebrity artist", I don't feel any different, but a lot people look at me in a differently, so when I have the chance bond through Twitter, Facebook and shows like The Makeup Show, it really gives me the opportunity reconnect and inspire myself and others.

HMM: How does social media help grow your business?

SF: I am overwhelmed sometimes by the love and positive responses I get on Twitter- that stuff means a lot!  The people who are watching your work and your standard of excellence, those are the people who are holding you up- those are the people whose shoulders I stand on.  If I weren't in the beauty business, I don't know that I would be on Twitter and Facebook.  I don't tweet about much personal business.  My stuff is very much geared towards makeup and how-to's, and some funny stuff along the way. Of course it helps to grow a business and broaden your fan base.  It helps a lot, you definitely have to be 'on it' nowadays.

HMM: What do you think are going to be hot colors and trends for Spring/Summer makeup?

SF:  I hear this question a lot- I've been a spokesperson for Covergirl and Revlon, and have done many classes for various cosmetic lines and they always want you to talk about trends.  I have to say, the trends I am talking to are still the same old ones.  I would love to say there is something so new and different about what I am doing- maybe the shape of the eye is different, but that's my artistry.  Everyone can't rock green eyeshadow and an orange lip just because I say it's in, so I say makeup is a personality and it's going to change.  Taking a chance on doing a different nail color or whether it shows up on your eye as a liner, those are great ways to incorporate color.  I love forest green, it's a very wearable color for women of color with olive and yellow undertones, so it doesn't contrast too much, but still gives you a nice punch of color. I don't' really preach trends as much as I preach about education.

HMM: How do you get sheer coverage, and what do you think every woman needs to apply before leaving the house?

SF: Women know what they need.  Concealer is one of those products that everyone really benefits from, whether you're just using a little to highlight the eye and set it with powder, you have that option.  Play to your personality. Bronzer really becomes key, maybe switch out your powder that was really matte and using a bronzer to get a luminous glow....you want to promote the glow, use texture- shimmering lips, color is a great way to look dressed without having to wear a face full of anything else!

While taking in some new products, workshops, and all of the excitement at The Makeup Show NYC last month, HMM popped in on Sam Fine for a quickie Q & A session.  It was the first time meeting the famed makeup artist and he couldn't have been friendlier or more disarming.  Read below to see what he has been up to, what he thinks about Social media and his thoughts on color trends for Spring and Summer.
